Dr. Emily M. Been
Emily joined the Narang Lab in Fall 2023 at UCLA as a postdoctoral scholar. She received her Ph.D. in Physics from Stanford University, M.S. in Materials Science & Engineering from Stanford, and her B.App.Sci. in Engineering Physics from Queen’s University, Ontario, Canada. Her doctoral research at Stanford encompassed unconventional superconductivity, x-ray spectroscopy theory, and topological materials.
At UCLA, she is focusing on the rich crossover between condensed matter theory and high-energy physics, studying behavior and signatures of non-trivial topology that host quasiparticle versions of particles beyond the Standard Model, like Weyl fermions, Majorana fermions, and candidate dark-matter axions. She is also studying ways to leverage condensed matter excitations and quantum information for next-generation dark-matter detection.
Fun fact: Emily spends most of her free time with her energetic border collie, and they enjoy hiking and backpacking together.
