Dr. Davis Welakuh

Postdoctoral scholar

Davis joined the Narang Lab in 2021 as a postdoctoral research scholar. He obtained his PhD in theoretical and computational physics from the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter and University of Hamburg, Germany. His research interest focuses on first-principles description of light-matter interactions within photonic environments like optical cavities or nanoplasmonic structures. To better understand, complement and predict new experimental avenues, theoretical methods and ab-initio applications become necessary to capture the complex interaction of light and matter. Davis actively participates in developing and implementing such approaches, e.g. quantum-electrodynamical density-functional theory (QEDFT).

In the Narang Lab, Davis employs QEDFT to study, modify or control chemical and physical properties of materials strongly coupled to the electromagnetic field within the linear-response regime and beyond.

Fun fact: Davis does 10km run daily but wouldn’t commit to any competitive race.
